Glancing Back for Nov. 8: Area grocery stores report adequate supplies of sugar
Nov. 8, 1924
NEWTON — Highway 33, from Newton to north of Willow Hill, ought to be open for travel by December 1, as the Newton bridge across the Embarras river, its south approach, and the fifteen viaduct spans for waterways across the bottom are completed, with the grades, cuts and other bridges and culverts of the line sufficiently near completion to be ready for vehicular traffic in three weeks. It is said the state highway department will keep the road in sue to settle the dirt grades so they will be firm enough to be slabbed as early next spring as the work can be let to insure the best results....MATTOON — Frank Orndorff, amusement concessionaire at Paradise Park, was reported on Friday as having sold his seven acre tract of land between parcels belonging to the city's property there, states this morning to the JG that he is not to move any of his buildings from the land he sold for a period of his lease expires. At the end of that time Orndorff intends to move everything from the reservoir grounds to a small tract of land he purchased east of Paradise Lake and there erect a dancing pavilion, staking rink, and other buildings. He also states his agreement with the water board is that the board is not to erect or install any amusement enterprises on the Paradise lake reservation for a period of five years from the date of the purchase of the Orndorff tract.
CHARLESTON — The manufacturer of the voting machines used in Tuesday's election in Coles and Lee counties came under fire today. Coles County Clerk Harry Grafton told the Journal Gazette that in three precincts in the county "approximately 275 to 300 votes were not recorded." Lee County Clerk John Stoffer told the Journal, "We lost, as far as we can determine, 128 votes in one precinct in Dixon (Lee County seat)." Democrats in Coles County expressed anger today over the apparent failure of many of the machines to perform properly in Tuesday's election. The machines - called the Video Voter System - were manufactured by the Frank Thornber Co. of Chicago. Coles County ordered the machines in July. The lost votes in Coles County, and nobody knows exactly how many votes have been lost due to malfunction - conceivably could have changed the election results in several races for county officers. Coles County Democratic Chairman Joseph Connelly told the newspaper today, "The Democrats are angry. I have never seen them so angry." Democrats had expected to sweep the races for sheriff, county clerk and state's attorney. Republicans won all three offices. Only about 48 percent of the county's voters case ballots in the election, making it the lowest voter turnout in the county for many years. A number of officials have told the JG that they believe difficulties voters had with the machines may have contributed to the low voter turnout...CHARLESTON — Whitt's End reopened Thursday following the issuance of a stay order in Coles County Circuit Court. The order was issued in preparation for an administrative review of a State Liquor Control Commission ruling which upheld the decision of Mayor Bob Hickman to refuse to renew the establishment's liquor license. Whitt's End will be allowed, under the terms of the order, to serve liquor pending the results of Tuesday's hearing on the matter...MATTOON — Area grocery store owners and managers said today they don't plan to ration sugar unless there is a run on the sweetener. Contacted this morning, the stores said their sugar supplies are adequate to meet a normal demand. "I can't speak for the company (Eisner's) but I can't see that happening," Ronald Sims of Eisner's said. "We have plenty of sugar." A spokesman for the four IGA stores in the area said the stores also do not plan to ration sugar. Reports of higher prices for sugar have led to rationing by some stores throughout the nation.
TOLEDO — Two prisoners escaped from the Cumberland County jail Sunday evening. Their taste of freedom was brief. Sheriff Steve Ozier said the prisoners were in the outdoor recreation area when they escaped. They were captured within a half hour. Ozier said, "Now we know that we have a little weakness there. We will continue to investigate."... CHARLESTON — Firerighters don't know the cause of a place that destroyed a rural Charleston home Saturday morning. Nobody was home when the fire started at the Brent and Sharon Krukewitt residence, located about 1 1/2 miles east of Illinois Route 130 south of Charleston, near Bent Tree Golf Course. Firefighters performed a search of the house to be sure that Brent Krukewitt wasn't inside, as his vehicle was parked there. They later learned he was at work. All three stations of the Lincoln Fire Protection District responded, said Don Madlem, chief of Station No. 1....NEOGA — A veterans monument honoring all branches of the armed services was dedicated Saturday in front of a crowd of about 20 people in Neoga. The Neoga American Legion Post 458 paid for and erected the new monument located in Neoga Sitting Park on U.S. Route 45.
