Hearing on West Main upgrades slated for October

A.Wilson2 hr ago

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing next month on the nearly $12.6 million in corridor improvements planned for West Main Street in Waynesboro.

The Oct. 22 hearing is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Waynesboro City Council chambers in the Yancey Municipal Building at 503 W. Main St. Members of the public can meet one on one with VDOT officials about the project or submit written comments at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting.

Written comments can be mailed to: Jennifer Hoover, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, VA, 24401-9029.

Oral comments can be recorded at the meeting with the help of a court reporter.

VDOT's project will replace the center turn lane on West Main Street with raised medians that allow left turns only at designated median openings. Most of the commercial access driveways and side streets will be restricted to right turns in and out. According to VDOT, restricting the number of full access points onto West Main Street, the number of crashes will be reduced.

Multimodal improvements include a proposed sidewalk, crosswalks, wheelchair-accessible facilities and traffic signal modifications. The project will be in Waynesboro between Hopeman Parkway and the western city limits, just west of Lew DeWitt Boulevard.

VDOT reports that by 2048 West Main Street will have an estimated traffic volume of 20,600 vehicles per day. That compares to a 2021 traffic count of 18,300 vehicles per day.
