Here’s how reservations work as Red Rock Canyon timed entry begins Oct. 1

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Starting Oct. 1, you'll need a reservation to enjoy the Scenic Drive at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Without that reservation, visitors are advised to get out there early — like 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. — or go late in the day — after 5 p.m.

The Scenic Drive will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Oct. 1 through May 31, and reservations are required between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Standard entry fees apply: $20 per vehicle, $10 for motorcycles, $8 for bicycles and $5 for pedestrians. Federal passes ( America the Beautiful ) are valid at Red Rock.

Reservations are timed to manage traffic in the park and preserve the quality of experience. Make a reservation here through Recreation.gov

Making a reservation doesn't put you on the clock. You can stay until the park closes if you want. It's designed to space out arrivals, and visitors are required to start their visit within their 1-hour window.

It's still hot out there, so prepare by packing plenty of water, and turn around immediately if you start to feel symptoms of heat stress. Know your limits.

As temperatures begin to drop, programs are planned through the month of October. See the schedule below and register at www.redrockcanyonlv.org/event-calendar .

If it seems like a perfect day to go out to Red Rock, you're probably not the only one who thinks so. Popular spots like Icebox Canyon, Sandstone Quarry and Calico II usually fill up early, and parking lots fill up, too. It's important to observe marked parking spaces so emergency vehicles have room to operate.

Park officials remind the public: Leave no trace. "With millions of visitors coming to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area every year, remember all your impacts will be magnified. With every step you take off trail, every piece of trash you leave, and every little rock you take, imagine all of the millions of other visitors doing the same thing. Respect the land and do your part to make sure Red Rock Canyon stays just as beautiful for years to come."
