HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Dothan boys basketball opens season with resounding win
The Dothan boys basketball team opened the season with a resounding 68-33 win over Brewbaker Tech on Thursday night in high school basketball action in Montgomery.
Four Wolves players scored in double figures and a fifth was just outside that plateau to lead DHS.
Diggy Coleman had 14 points, Bryson Berry 12, Josh Lee 11 and Jordan Rollins 10 to lead the way. Darrius Walker added eight points.
Charles Henderson 55, Pike Road 53: Charles Henderson boys started the season with a 55-53 comeback win at Pike Road.
The Trojans overcame a 38-33 deficit at the end of the third quarter and took the lead with two minutes to go. They held on for the win down the stretch.
A steal and dunk by Jydarien Burney ignited the Trojans in the fourth quarter. Tyler Cross had a steal and a layup in the final minute and Damien Williams hit a free throw with 2.1 seconds left to help seal the win.
Cross led CHHS with 22 points and Burney followed with 12.
Jamall Canty led Pike Road with 17 points and Morgan Robinson added 12.
Wiregrass Kings 76, Harvest Christian 24: The Wiregrass Kings won at home against Harvest Christian of Ozark.
Brewbaker Tech 41, Dothan 40: Brewbaker Tech hit two free throws with 0.3 of a second left to overtake Dothan and win the season-opening game for both teams.
Dothan led 41-40 and missed two free throws with seven seconds left. A loose ball scramble after the second miss resulted in Brew Tech getting the ball at halfcourt. On the ensuing play, a Rams player drove the lane and picked up a Dothan foul, leading to the game-winning free throws.
Ellisia Rambo led Dothan with 13 points and Makayla Brown followed with 12. RyClaire McCree added six points.
Pike Road 56, Charles Henderson 29: Raeghan Worley had 11 points, while Harmony Hubbard and Rylan Mitchell had eight points each to lead Charles Henderson in the season-opening loss.
Hooper Academy 45, Abbeville Christian 26: Abbeville Christian stayed in range most of the game before the Colts bolted away in a game at the Evangel Christian Tip-off Classic.
Hooper took a 27-20 lead out to 19 points behind 12 straight points in the second half.
Taylor Hudspeth led Abbeville Christian with 11 points, mostly behind three 3-pointers. Amari George added seven points. Anna Blakenship had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Tuesday night
Enterprise Christian Academy 35, Wiregrass Kings 15: The Kings lost to Enterprise Christian on Tuesday. Avery Barnes had six points to lead the Kings.
Junior Varsity boys
Wiregrass Kings 46, Harvest Christian 30: Stetson Chastain had 13 points, Zayden Lawrence nine and Andrew Simmons and Joshua Treadaway had six points each to lead the Kings' victory on Thursday.
Junior Varsity girls
Dothan 19, Carroll 9: McKenzie Black had eight points plus seven steals and Chasity Knight had seven rebounds to lead the Wolves on Wednesday night.
Marta Indiano added five points for DHS.
