Micronesian historian, author and educator Don A. Farrell will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Tumon Bay's Oct. 8 meeting in Ballroom A of Hyatt Regency Guam in Tumon.

Farrell has dedicated over four decades to the study and preservation of Micronesia's rich history.

Born on July 28, 1947, in Redmond, Oregon, Farrell's journey from the U.S. Air Force to becoming a prominent voice in Micronesian history exemplifies a lifelong commitment to education and cultural heritage.

Farrell's extensive body of work includes notable publications such as "Liberation–1944: The Pictorial History of Guam," "The Sacrifice of Guam: 1919–1943," and "Tinian and The Bomb."

His scholarship has shed light on significant historical events, particularly those surrounding World War II, offering valuable insights into the experiences of the Mariana Islands.

After earning his bachelor's degree in biology from California State University, Fullerton, and a teaching credential from California State University, San Bernardino, Farrell embarked on his academic career in California before relocating to Guam in 1977.

It was during his time on Guam that he developed a deep interest in the local history, eventually taking on various roles, including public relations officer for the Guam Legislature and chief of staff for the speaker of the Guam Legislature.

In 1987, Farrell moved to Tinian, where he continued to inspire students as a high school teacher while also serving as a historical consultant for the CNMI Public School System.

His commitment to the preservation of history and cultural education has earned him numerous accolades, including the CNMI Governor's Award for Publications in History in 2018 and a Senate Commemorative Resolution in 2019.

Farrell's contributions have been recognized by local governments and institutions, ensuring that the stories of the islands are told and remembered.

As Farrell approaches his 78th birthday, the community invites everyone to celebrate his legacy and the importance of historical education.
