Hoppy’s Bar & Grill hosts hunter’s dinner ahead of firearm season opening day

KENTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Hoppy's Bar & Grill held a hunter's dinner on Thursday night before the beginning of firearm deer season.

Many hunters from the U.P. and beyond stopped by to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. Hoppy's Bar & Grill owner Jessica Nance says the hunting season is a busy time of year for areas like Kenton.

"Historically, the hunting season is what we are known for. Here at Hoppy's, we are a hunters bar, we like to think we're the premier destination for hunters from a hunters bar perspective. We've been open almost 80 years and this is where a lot of hunters have gone," Nance said.

Nance says the money raised on Thursday will go toward the Kenton-Sidnaw Historical Society. She adds it is important to invest in these organizations so the traditions of hunting can be passed down to future generations.

"We are working really hard as a business and I know other businesses are trying to support the community and show that we're giving back and we're doing things. So come support us so we can support the community. But that means also bringing in the next generation of hunters," Nance said.

Randy Frost, a hunter who will be going out this year says the entire camping experience makes the season special.

"You make a lot of good friends, you know, and it's the camaraderie thing. I just had a guy tell me if you come up here and you come to get a deer, you're coming up here for the wrong reasons. You know, you got to come up here and enjoy deer camp and the whole experience," Frost said.

Frost hopes everyone who goes out during the season has an enjoyable time.
