Hospital In Hartford Celebrates Milestone Heart Procedure Saint Francis Hospital recently celebrated a major milestone regarding a life-saving procedure that is minimally invasive.

HARTFORD, CT — A Hartford-based hospital recently celebrated a milestone surgical procedure that has saved lives over the years.

According to Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford , its "Structural Heart Team" recently performed its 1,000th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

According to Trinity Health, Saint Francis has been performing "this minimally invasive procedure" since 2015.

The hospital said TAVR offers an "effective alternative to traditional open-heart surgery for patients suffering from aortic valve disease, including aortic stenosis."

Dr. Haseeb Qazi, an interventional cardiologist at the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute at Saint Francis performed the milestone procedure alongside Dr. Joseph Flack, a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Aortic stenosis occurs when the aortic valve narrows, impeding blood flow from the heart.

This condition can lead to various symptoms, including shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations, chest pain, and fatigue.

There is no medical therapy to treat the condition and severe stenosis typically requires intervention.

TAVR provides a minimally invasive option for patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Using a catheter-based approach, a new aortic valve is placed without the need for open-heart surgery.

This method not only reduces recovery time but also significantly enhances patients' quality of life.
