How former Predators coach John Hynes made NHL record book on Filip Gustavsson goalie goal

Former Nashville Predators coach John Hynes set an unusual NHL record on Tuesday night.

In the Minnesota Wild's 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues, Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson scored a goal with nine seconds remaining, becoming just the 15th goalie to score a goal in NHL history.

Hynes was also coach for the Nashville Predators when Pekka Rinne scored against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 9, 2020, making him the only coach in league history to be behind the bench for two goalie goals.

Two goaltenders have scored multiple goals - Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur - but both players had different coaches behind the bench. Mike Keenan and Paul Holmgren coached Hextall for his two goals, while Jacques Lemaire, Robbie Ftorek and Pete DeBoer coached Brodeur for his three goals.

Nashville is the only franchise with goals by two different goaltenders, Rinne and Chris Mason, who was credited with a goal on April 15, 2006.

Hynes was hired by the Predators on Jan. 7, 2020, after the team fired Peter Laviolette. The game at the United Center when Rinne scored was Hynes' second game as coach of the Predators.

The Predators fired Hynes on May 30, 2023, and hired Andrew Brunette as his replacement. Later that year, on Nov. 23, Minnesota hired Hynes after firing coach Dean Evason, one time Milwaukee Admirals coach in the Nashville organization.

Over 248 games, Hynes led the Predators to a 134-96-18 record and a 3-11 record in the playoffs. Through 67 games, Hynes has a 36-26-5 record with the Wild.
