Texas A&M basketball (0-1) hopes to wash the taste out of its mouth following a season-opening upset loss to UCF on the road.

The No. 13 Aggies struggled down the stretch against the Knights and ended up paying with an early nonconference defeat .

It was A&M's first season-opening loss since 2000, when it was defeated by George Washington on the road top open the year.

The Aggies will look to rebound against East Texas A&M — formerly known as Texas A&M-Commerce — who they beat in last year's opener, 78-46.

Despite the opening-night loss, Minnesota transfer forward Pharrel Payne had a solid debut with A&M, leading the team with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with six rebounds.

While returning guard Wade Taylor IV added 13 points and seven assists, the Aggies were missing a key new piece in SMU transfer guard Zhuric Phelps .

He's working through an undisclosed injury and would add a lot of scoring ability whenever he's ready to play for A&M.
