How West Alabama Voted In The 2024 Presidential Election
TUSCALOOSA, AL — The 2024 presidential election is in the book, with Republican Donald Trump becoming only the second president since Grover Cleveland to win non-consecutive terms in the White House.
{p/p}According to the latest unofficial totals from Tuscaloosa County , Trump received 50,617 votes in Tuscaloosa for 59.50% — compared to Vice President Kamala Harris snagging 33,322 votes on the Democratic ticket.
Independent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who endorsed Trump in the lead-up to the election after suspending his campaign, appeared on the ballot in Alabama and received 434 votes in Tuscaloosa County. He was followed by fellow independents Chase Oliver (167) and Jill Stein (155).
While much smaller than Tuscaloosa County, neighboring Pickens County followed a similar trajectory on Election Day, with Trump securing 5,455 or 61% of the vote.
Farther south, Harris carried the entire Black Belt region of the state, along with Jefferson County to the north. But that was the extent of her success in Alabama, where the vice president received 767,159 votes or 34.2%.
As was the case across the country on Tuesday, Trump won by historically wide margins in rural counties. This also proved the trend in West Alabama.
Across the multi-county Tuscaloosa Patch coverage area, Harris won in predominantly Black Greene and Hale counties, according to the latest numbers from the Associated Press .
The vice president performed best in Greene County, where she received 3,131 votes or 78% of the vote. Despite Harris winning the county, this still fell about 700 short of the votes cast for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential — a trend that became apparent nationwide on Tuesday.
Using Hale County as an example to underscore this point, Harris underperformed Biden's 2020 numbers when he won the county with 4,663 votes. That's compared to the vice president narrowly edging out Trump 3,861-3,363 in Hale County on Tuesday.
Trump found his biggest victories in the more rural, mostly white counties in west Alabama, winning with 85% in Fayette and Walker counties while outperforming in Lamar County with 88% of the vote.
To highlight the success of Trump's rural strategy, the former president and now president-elect won 6,028-805 in Lamar County on Tuesday.
The latest unofficial statewide totals show Trump received 1,454,170 votes or 64.8% — his best performance in Alabama in the last three elections (62% in 2016 and 2020).
