H.S. BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: East Burke girls open season with nonconference win at South Caldwell
SAWMILLS — Fresh off an appearance in the NCHSAA 2A state championship game, the East Burke girls basketball team opened its season with a 77-58 nonconference victory at South Caldwell on Friday.
The Lady Cavaliers led 20-12 after a quarter, 34-29 at halftime and 56-42 following three periods of play before closing out the contest with a 21-16 fourth frame.
Braelyn Stilwell (28 points), Kara Brinkley (21) and Journi McDowell (10) also finished in double-digit scoring for EBHS. Also scoring for EB were Maci McNeil (nine points), Anna Coble (seven) and Addison Sisk (two).
The host Lady Spartans were led by Ava Anderson (24 points), Kristin Barber (13) and Maggie Wilks (10).
West Caldwell 36, Patton 17
The Lady Panthers (0-1) fell in their season-opener, a nonconference game on the road in Gamewell on Friday, falling behind 7-4 after one period, 21-7 by halftime and 27-11 after three frames before the host Lady Warriors paced the fourth period 9-6.
Karson Pinkerton (six points), Melina Bernabe (four), Mia Chapman (four), Jaycee Mull (two) and Leah Clark (one) scored for PHS.
Sierra Brown led West Caldwell with 15 points.
Bessemer City 66, NCSSM-Morganton 36
The Lady Dragons (0-2) dropped their home-opener in nonconference play on Friday in Morganton. No more details were available.
West Caldwell 66, Patton 58
The Panthers (0-1) dropped their season-opening nonconference contest on the road in Gamewell on Friday, falling behind 15-13 after a quarter, leading 35-34 at halftime and trailing 51-49 after three periods before giving up a 15-9 advantage in the fourth.
Nathan Waters (13 points) and Louie Skelly (10) paced PHS. Patton also got scoring from Cohen Christian (nine points), Laine Barrier (eight), Olando Norman (eight), Cole Attaway (six), Jackson Griffin (two) and Karson Kress (two).
Kaydin Dixon (21 points), Zion Thomas (21) and Jay Maxwell (16) led the way for the Warriors.
South Caldwell 72, East Burke 49
The Cavaliers (0-1) lost their season-opening nonconference game on the road in Sawmills on Friday, trailing 14-12 after a quarter, 32-24 at halftime and 58-46 after three quarters before the host Spartans closed things out with a 14-3 fourth frame.
EBHS was led by Owen Hartmann (14 points). Also scoring for EB were Cannon Morrison (seven points), Dautry Ragle (seven), Barger Shook (seven), Luke Demiter (six), Jay Dixon (three) and Nathan Fortenberry (two).
Connor Setzer (20 points), Carter Anderson (16), Tyler Cline (14) and Lawson Wilks (11) led the way for South Caldwell.
Bessemer City 67, NCSSM-Morganton 59
The Dragons (1-3) fell in nonconference action at home in Morganton on Friday, leading 21-16 after a quarter before trailing 37-25 at halftime and 54-46 after three periods before both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Jonathan Black (17 points), Tristen Gordon (17) and Raheem McClure (15) led the way for the visiting Yellow Jackets.
NCSSM-Morganton also fell to Jackson Day by 69-50 final score on Thursday in Morganton.
