HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — Issues with mail deliveries have plagued North Alabama for the past few months, but postal workers want to let citizens know they're doing everything in their power to remedy this.

The American Postal Workers Union is holding a nationwide 'Day of Action,' with postal workers stationed outside of post offices in hopes of catching lawmakers' attention. Many express grievances about being overworked and understaffed, causing delays in deliveries.

Alabama Postal Workers Union President Shelton Thomas said that this problem can be fixed starting with mail being processed in North Alabama again, not Birmingham.

"Trying to get rallies like this going to get it back to the board of governors, to Congress, and so forth, commissioners, cities, mayors, to help join in to get this mail back," Thomas said. "Because I think we have a great city and we need to get the mail back where it needs to be."

Thomas assured News 19 that citizens should not be concerned about voting by mail in the upcoming election. He said there is a plan in place to ensure every ballot arrives on time if submitted by the deadline.

The 'Day of Action' will happen at the downtown post office on Clinton Avenue on Oct. 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
