‘I have loads to offer’ – Cathal Barrett left off Tipperary panel but double All-Star defender says he’s not retiring

Barrett, one of the most durable corner-backs in the game over the last decade, has been deemed surplus to requirements for now.

The Holycross/Ballycahill man, a two-time All-Star in the years (2016 and 2019) that Tipperary won All-Ireland titles in his time as a player, has confirmed his departure to the Irish Independent.

But at 31 he is not retiring and feels he still has something to offer, pledging to put himself back in the frame.

"Unfortunately, I have been informed by the manager [Liam Cahill] that I have not been selected for the training panel in 2025," he said.

"I am very disappointed in this regard as I feel I have loads to offer but such is life and the decision is outside of my control. I'll work away myself and put myself in contention if needed."

Barrett is a favourite with the Tipperary crowd for his wholehearted and combative style of play.

He was a Tipperary U-21 player for three consecutive years and made his senior debut in 2014 as they brought Kilkenny to an All-Ireland final replay.

Barrett's omission will draw a parallel with Noel Connors' departure from the Waterford squad in 2020 after a conversation with Cahill, then the Déise manager.

But Tipperary are on a firm path to change with Patrick 'Bonner' Maher and Dan McCormack announcing their retirement in recent days. McCormack's retirement was confirmed by Tipperary GAA on Thursday.

"Since joining the panel in 2015 it has been a huge honour to represent Tipperary, and I will always cherish the time I got to wear the blue and gold at the highest possible level," said McCormack, like Barrett a two-time All-Ireland winner.

It's understood that other established players of recent years may not be involved in 2025, with further retirements anticipated.

Tipperary have endured a poor year, losing a National League semi-final to Clare before then failing to win a Munster Championship round-robin game.
