If you get a call from someone saying they're a Benicia cop, police warn it's likely a scam

Benicia police are advising the public to remain vigilant against scams after several reports from local residents who received phone calls from someone claiming to be from the police department.

Police said the scammer uses a false badge number to identify themself and says the resident is a victim of identity theft.

"The calls are coming from 745-3411 or 745-3412. Please note that these are our non-emergency dispatch numbers and are NOT outgoing phone lines. Any incoming call from one of these numbers is a scam," police said on social media .

"Please be cautious ... do not provide anyone with your personal information."
