Illinois Secretary of State unveils ‘Fast Lane’ DMV kiosks

CHICAGO (WGEM) - Illinoisans will be able to access DMV services at the grocery store. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias (D) unveiled "Fast Lane" DMV kiosks Thursday in Chicago.

His office is launching a pilot program placing 15 kiosks in stores across the state including Mariano's, Jewel-Osco, Kroger and Meijer grocery stores.

People can use the machines to renew their driver's license or state ID and purchase vehicle registration stickers.

Giannoulias said the goal is to eliminate the "time tax" people feel at the DMV. The average transaction at these machines takes about two minutes.

"By using technology to improve the customer experience and deliver more services, we're able to provide new ways for customers to easily get what they need as quickly and conveniently as possible," he said.

The kiosks were designed by Intellectual Technology Inc. (ITI), which currently operates similar kiosks in 17 states.

Giannoulias said the program does not use state funds but ITI does charge a $4.95 transaction fee plus potential credit card fees.

He said the kiosks will offer English and Spanish language services during the pilot program. He hopes to increase the number of languages offered as the program expands.
