In One Ear: 'No thoroughfare'

E.Anderson39 min ago

From The Daily Astorian, Oct. 19, 1882:

• "No thoroughfare" for teams between the two towns (of Astoria and Upper Astoria). The crossings at each end of Cedar Street are removed, and communication is broken. We hear of a boat, about to be put on the "Upper Astoria route."

Note: Astoria's 1876 city charter did not go past Scow Bay (pictured), which separated Astoria and Upper Astoria. Now filled in, Columbia Memorial Hospital is among the buildings that are where Scow Bay used to be.

According to a 1903 Oregon Historical Quarterly, in 1891, the city boundaries were changed to include Upper Astoria, Alderbrook and all the land between Alderbrook and the John Day River, and Smith Point (near the Port of Astoria Pier 3). (Photo: Clatsop County Historical Society)
