LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Following the attack of an elderly man at Cheyenne Park , the City of Laredo Parks and Recreation Department is now sharing what safety measures are in place at that park and others.

The tranquility of Cheyenne Park was shattered when an elderly man was assaulted by an unknown assailant on Saturday, September 14.

The incident has prompted swift action from city officials and the Parks and Recreation Department.

Director of Parks and Recreation, JJ Gomez, stated that with the $1 million the city received last year, they are continuing to install more cameras at Laredo parks.

"Now, we're at 35 cameras installed. We're focusing on the big parks, North Central Park Independence, and Slaughter because those are the most regional parks. Hopefully, in the next six months, we will be installing 65 more cameras in 50 other parks, including Cheyenne," said Gomez.

The Laredo Police Department is also doing its part by patrolling the area and continuing its investigation in this case.

Laredo Police Investigator, Joe Baeza, says this incident is particularly alarming in our community.

"We don't have a lot of stranger-on-stranger assaults. This particular case is even more strange because there wasn't an ulterior motive that we can tell. After all, the person wasn't robbed. It wasn't a person who was trying to buy something from another person, or even people who knew one another, so it's a random stranger-on-stranger assault, which is very strange for the community," said Baeza.

As for the family of the victim, they continue to seek justice so others do not fall victim to the same crime.

Laredo Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 956-795-2800 or call Laredo Crime Stoppers at 727-TIPS.

All calls are anonymous, and information leading to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
