Irving Elementary students learn about potential career pathways

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sioux City Career Academy is collaborating with Irving Elementary students with the 5th on 4th program.

Students were able to interact and engage with a variety of career pathways in the career academy. The theme focused on agriculture, with a special guest from Morningside University. The idea of the program is to get kids ready for different careers they can encounter and to be ready by the time college rolls around.

"When you have that culture going... as a matter of fact we start with our kindergartners, and we want to expose them every single year they're with us in Sioux City schools," career academy principal Erin Kilburn said. "And for the fifth graders, it's a pivotal time because they transition to middle school where they start taking exploratory classes and really digging into college and career coursework."

The fifth graders broke out in different sections about agriculture, and they hope this knowledge is something they can take home with them.
