Jersey students primed to design and build F1 car

Secondary school students in Jersey will have an opportunity to design, build and race their own small-scale F1 car as part of a new initiative.

Digital Jersey and Skills Jersey have teamed up to run the global challenge in the Channel Islands.

It said the scheme would help students develop teamwork, marketing, project management and science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills within an F1 context.

A total of 18 teams will build cars powered by a CO2 canister to drive them on a specially constructed track.

Tony Moretta, CEO of Digital Jersey, said the project would "truly engage" local students and boost their STEM skills, as well as marketing, communication, teamwork and project management abilities.

"There is also a great opportunity to go and represent Jersey in the UK and, potentially, further afield," he added.

Students would have access to computer aided design software and specialist kit, Digital Jersey said.

Teams in Jersey will then compete against each other, with the winner going through to a national UK finals stage - and potentially the world finals in 2025.

Last year, the world finals were held over three days in Singapore, with 68 teams taking part.
