John Thune Shares Plans for Trump's Agenda After Senate Leader Vote
South Dakota Senator John Thune says that Republicans are "united" behind President-elect Donald Trump 's policies and agenda, in a statement following his nomination as Senate Majority Leader.
Thune, who has been serving as minority whip, beat our Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida on Wednesday. Thune's nomination sparked backlash from some of Trump's supporters given his past criticism of the president-elect.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter , early Wednesday afternoon Thune wrote that he's "extremely honored" to have gotten his colleagues support. He also tried to assuage some concerns that he wasn't in Trump's corner.
"I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House. This Republican team is united behind President Trump's agenda, and our work starts today," Thune wrote.
The Senate will shift to Republican control in the end of January, following last week's election, in which the GOP secured at least 52 seats.
