JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Johnson City Fire Department is receiving some crucial upgrades thanks to funding allocated by Senator Lea Webb.

Webb announced on Monday that she secured $200,000 in state funding for essential infrastructure upgrades to the Johnson City Fire Department's Station 1 at 270 Floral Avenue. The repairs will address structural issues while ensuring the building remains a safe space for firefighters as well as the community they serve.

The necessary improvements include structural repairs to the basement, which has been prone to water damage during rain or storm events. The project will include waterproofing and reinforcing the top surface of the station, along with exterior repairs to prevent further deterioration.

"I am thrilled to have allocated this funding to help the Johnson City Fire Department," said Webb. "This fire station is a vital resource for the Village, and it is crucial that it remains structurally sound and equipped to meet the demands of our community. By investing in these critical repairs, we are not only protecting the firefighters and their equipment but also ensuring they can continue to provide rapid and reliable emergency services for years to come. I am committed to investing in and supporting our public safety departments so that they have the resources they need to protect us."

"We are grateful to Senator Webb for securing this much-needed funding for Station 1," said Mayor Martin Meaney. "These critical upgrades will ensure our firefighters have a safe, reliable facility to operate from, allowing them to continue serving our community effectively. The safety of our residents depends on having a strong, well-supported fire department, and this investment reinforces our shared commitment to public safety in Johnson City. These much-needed funds secured by Senator Webb saved the Johnson City tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars. The partnerships between State and Local Governments are essential for the continued success of Local government. We thank Senator Webb for being a great partner!"

The Johnson City Fire Department was established in 1889. Since its inception, it has provided around-the-clock fire protection, search and rescue, pre-hospital care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors of the Village of Johnson City. Today, the station has 29 dedicated members. The department responds to over 2,000 emergencies annually and works to prevent incidents through fire safety education and disaster preparedness training.
