The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal impact on Interstate 25 near Bar Nunn, Wyoming, that diverted traffic off the southbound lane for about four hours Wednesday night after a juvenile pedestrian tried to cross and was hit by a vehicle.

The incident began at about 7:30 p.m. when Natrona County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call at 7:30 p.m. of a juvenile who assaulted a family member, the agency reports.

"Prior to deputies arrival, the juvenile fled the residence on foot and was later seen on I-25 approaching a vehicle traveling northbound," the sheriff's office says in a report on the incident. "The juvenile then crossed the median into the southbound lanes and was fatally struck by a vehicle near milepost 190."

Southbound traffic was diverted at exit 191 while the investigation was active.

Calls to the Wyoming Highway Patrol were not immediately returned.

Natrona County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kiera Hett said the highway lane was closed from 9:15 p.m. Wednesday to 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Because the victim was a juvenile, Hett said she could not release any other information except that the assault was confirmed.

The sheriff's office's Victim Services Unit provided assistance to the family and driver of the vehicle, according to the report.

Information about whether the driver of the vehicle that struck the juvenile was ticketed or driving at or below the posted speed limit was not available.

This story will be updated as more information is available.
