Kentucky leaders say economy, border security were high on voters’ minds

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Donald Trump easily won Kentucky's eight electoral college votes in the election.

The state's congressional delegation, along with legislative leaders, say Kentucky sent a message about what is needed in Washington.

Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, says the economy, safety, and cheaper energy were the top issues that resulted in Donald Trump winning the Presidency.

"I think you are going to see a total change in what happens with law enforcement as it relates to the border and a total change in the economy," said Stivers.

Congressman James Comer, R-KY 1st District, says inflation and the border were the two biggest issues that drove voters to the polls.

"In reality, the American people support legal immigration and there is a way to support who came over here legally. But they don't support turning on the TV every night and seeing hundreds and thousands crossing the border every day," said Rep. Comer.

Representative Comer says he believes Trump will tackle some foreign policy initiatives right off the bat and will focus on a smooth transition with cabinet secretaries.

Comer also says overspending also needs to be tackled and believes that will be a frequent topic in his oversight committee.

"We got to find a way to cut out the fat. If we are going to have tax cuts which we need, we are going to have to have spending cuts as well," said Comer.

Spending issues also highlight what the average Kentuckian wants, according to Stivers.

"People are worried about the economy; the cost of groceries is up. The cost of paying your mortgage is up," said Stivers. "People speak at the polls with their pocketbook."

Stivers also says what happened in Kentucky shows that the Republican momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

The state electoral college will meet on December 17 in the state Senate chambers to certify the eight electoral college votes.
