Kentucky mother indicted on murder charge after baby dies

CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Kentucky mother has been indicted on a murder charge following the death of her child.

According to Kentucky State Police, troopers began an investigation in April into a suspected physical abuse complaint involving a three-month-old girl.

The child had been taken to the UK Children's Hospital in Lexington with multiple fractures, hemorrhages, and retinal bleeding.

KSP says, through investigation, the child's mother, Brianna "Morgan" Burkhart of Clay County, was developed as a suspect.

In June, Burkhart was indicted by a grand jury on three counts of assault and one count of criminal abuse. The indictment alleges she caused injuries to the infant and did not seek medical attention.

In September, KSP says they learned the child had died at the hospital.

State police say the Clay County Grand Jury indicted Burkhart on November 7 on a murder charge.
