KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - The Killeen Police Department is asking for the community's help naming its newest K9 officer and it is hosting a naming contest.

According to a Facebook post, the dog, a two-year-old Dutch Shepherd, will be trained in both search and rescue, and explosives detection.

Members of the community are encouraged to either leave their suggestion in the comments of the Facebook post or at one of three locations in Killeen that are said to hold suggestion boxes:

  • The Killeen Police Department Headquarters located at 3304 Community Blvd.
  • The Town & Country Veterinary Medical Center located at 505 E. Elms Rd.
  • The Pet Supermarket located at 2602 Trimmier Rd.
  • The contest is in effect until Oct. 25, with the top three suggestions said to be posted online shortly after for a community vote.

"We invite the entire community to participate in this fun contest," the Killeen Police Department wrote. "Let's get creative!"
