RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Dick Scott Manor is a brand-new subsidized housing project on east 8th Street in Reno.

The land was donated by the City of Reno and with Recovery Funding, construction began in July of 2023.

A tour last month revealed 12 units; 8 one bedroom and 4 studio apartments which were nearly complete.

Through the VA and the Reno Housing Authority, 12 Veterans who were once homeless or in transition will move in next month.

"Really nice," says Derek Moore, a future Dick Scott Resident. "Everything is new. So, I mean who doesn't like moving into someplace where everything is new."

New, but considering the future residents' former circumstances, they might not have some of the essentials-like toiletries, cleaning products, towels, even a coffee maker.

That's where our viewers stepped in.

We asked that they make donations of such items so the Veterans at Dick Scott Manor could feel more at home.

Donations came in, and our viewers delivered.

"Having those pots and pans and small appliances; even personal hygiene items really are impactful for these Veterans," says Heidi McKendree, Deputy Executive Director with the Reno Housing Authority. "Really can turn these units into homes for them."

Two days ago, the Reno Housing Authority arrived at our studios to pick up the donated items.

Items many of us may take for granted but mean less worry, and more independence for the future residents of Dick Scott Manor.

"We are really pleased and grateful," says McKendree.
