Lady Gaga reflects on the ups and downs of her career: 'I think that I just went through a lot'... as latest film Joker FLOPS at box office

Lady Gaga is looking back on the ups and downs of her career with gratitude.

The singer and actress, 38, who is displaying both talents in Joker: Folie à Deux , and the companion album Harlequin, told People 'I'm in a new place.'

'I've been in the music industry since I was a teenager. And I've been working in the film industry for the last 10 years or so,' the Oscar winner said.

'And, you know, I think that I just went through a lot.'

Many of her struggles were shared with her fans in the 2017 documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two.

'I feel really grateful for the career that I've had,' she told the outlet.

The actress, who generously signed autographs for fans at the Joker: 'Folie à Deux premiere said, 'And I feel so grateful for my fans. Also, I think I had a lot of trouble with it at one point.'

I just feel a lot better now, and it's nice to be able to say that,' she explained. 'I feel really grateful to be able to say that.'

In Joker: Folie à Deux the New York City-born star plays Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, a former psychiatrist who falls in love with Joaquin Pheonix's Arther Fleck, aka The Joker in the sequel to the Academy Award winning Joker.

'I loved Arthur so much, like, who would be the love in his life?' Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, said on Good Morning America recently.

The actress, who wowed audiences in 2018's A Star is Born, said playing Harley Quinn was 'so completely freeing,' and that she was able to hide little pieces of herself in the character.

'When I first saw the film I was like, "Oh, that's in there! That part of me that I want no one to know about,"' she explained.

It was also Gaga's idea to peforming the music in the film live rather than using lipsync, something that terrified her on-screen love interest.

'You were really cool and kind of made me feel comfortable about that,' Phoenix said in the GMA interview.

'I can assure you that Joaquin using his natural voice was just so much more compelling than any lip synching would ever be,' she told the audience.

Gaga's personal life is looking up as well. She and boyfriend Michael Polansky, got engaged while at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as 'bleak' and 'disappointing' — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
