Last few days to weigh in on design, layout of new SA arboretum

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonians only have a few days left to weigh in their choose of three designs for the new arboretum on the southeast side of San Antonio.

The organization Arboretum San Antonio has secured 188 acres of green space that will be dedicated to tree on the city's southeast side. The green space is located at the former Republic Golf Club on Southeast Military between I-37 and Loop 410. The space is about two miles east of Brooks and about a 10-12 minute drive from downtown.

The organization posted a survey of three designs for people to choose their favorites. The survey runs through Nov. 17. The three designs are as follows:

Community Crossroads: This design blends cultural elements into the enviroment to represent the uniqueness of San Antonio. It includes an event center, a canopy walk, a museum and kayaking docks. The organization says this has the most potential for partnership and revenue streams.

Wild San Antonio: This design would maintain much of the current state of the site right now, which is a complex ecosystem of trees. It would focus on visitors exploring nature with hiking trails, camping and nature-based play for children.

The Testing Ground: This design would focus on landscapes, minimal buildings, and sleek architecture and design. It would include research plots, growing trees, seeds and food for use in the wider community. The organization says the Testing Ground would be the most useful in academic partnerships and would act as a living laboratory and science center.
