Law enforcement to crack down on unregistered vehicles in El Paso County

T.Brown2 hr ago
Multiple law enforcement agencies are teaming up to address the issue of expired vehicle registrations and unregistered vehicle violations along the Front Range.

For the initiative, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is joining forces with the Colorado Springs Police Department, Denver Police Department, Aurora Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Monument Police Department, Fountain Police Department and the Pueblo Police Department.

According to a press release sent out Monday afternoon, the project was fueled by residents' concerns and complaints .

"As a response, my office has committed to a surge in enforcement of this issue alongside our neighboring law enforcement agencies and a continued intentional enforcement of these violations," Sheriff Joseph Roybal said in the release.

"While my deputies continue to prioritize enforcement of violations such as speeding, distracted driving, reckless behavior, and impaired driving, we will increase our focus on identifying vehicles with expired registrations during this planned operation."

According to Colorado Springs police, residents can report unregistered or out-of-date plates as they see them driving in the community. Enforcement is where things get tricky, as officers often have difficulty tracking down the reported vehicles, PIO Caitlin Ford said.

The Sheriff's Office encourages the community to utilize the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Office, claiming it is "simple" for residents to update their vehicle registration.

"There are 15 locations across the Pikes Peak region, including several easy-to-use kiosks," said El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleiker. "The funds collected for vehicle registrations pay for our roads and bridges here in El Paso County, in our municipalities, and across Colorado."

To learn more about vehicle registration, renewing registration and more, law enforcement encourages those with questions to visit the Motor Vehicle Department section of the Clerk and Recorder website.

"As responsible citizens, it is our duty to ensure publicly used essential services, such as roads, are properly funded and maintained. I highly encourage the El Paso County citizens to check their plates and registration documents and, if necessary, update their vehicle registration accordingly," Roybal said.
