Lea Thompson broke down in tears after being questioned about her ex-fiancé's support for Donald Trump , just hours after the Republican defeated Kamala Harris to take back the White House . Thompson, 63, said she was 'scared' for her daughters and admitted she does not know how to 'move forward' in the wake of Trump's victory, during an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com. The Back to the Future actress struggled to fight back tears when asked about her recent criticism of Dennis Quaid , 70, who endorsed Trump , 78, at a California rally in October. 'You recently spoke up about your ex, Dennis Quaid and his ties with Donald Trump ,' she was asked. 'You've been a champion for women forever, yesterday, didn't work out. How do we move forward from today?' Thompson fell silent and started to cry before offering the dejected response: 'I don't know.' Struggling to contain her emotions she continued: 'I don't know. I'm sorry.' Asked if there was any reason to be 'hopeful' she replied: 'I don't feel so hopeful. I feel... scared. I have daughters. 'I don't know if it will affect you or me, but I am a mom and know people that have been very affected by having babies that have died. 'It just, I feel really bad for them. But America's spoken.' She continued: 'We fight the fights. We fight to fight and the battles that we want to carry. It's just not a lot of fun right now.' Finishing with a nod to Back to the Future, she joked that America needs a DeLorean – the time travelling machine used by Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox's Dr Emmett Brown and Marty McFly. 'We need that,' she said. 'We need to get on that.' Thompson's comments come weeks after she appeared to brand her ex, Quaid, 'stupid.' The Parent Trap actor publicly announced in May that he would be voting for Trump because of the 'weaponization of the justice system.' He then joined the former President at a campaign rally held at Calhoun Ranch in Coachella, California last month. 'I'm here to tell you that it's time to pick a side,' he said in a fiery speech. 'Are we going to be a nation that stands for the Constitution or for TikTok?' Thompson shared a video of Quaid on stage at the event and wrote on X: 'I was engaged to him.' She also included the hashtags '#VoteBlueToStopTheStupid' and '#CrimeIsActuallyDown.' The couple, who met on the set of Jaws 3-D in 1982, dated for five years until their split in 1987. They got engaged in 1984. Thompson met her now-husband, Howard Deutch, on the set of Some Kind of Wonderful in 1986. After her engagement to Quaid ended, her friendship with Deutch, who is 11 years her senior, blossomed into a romance. She and the film director, now 74, went on to tie the knot in 1989. They are parents to daughters Madelyn, 33, and Zoey, 29. Quaid, who was married to P J Soles from 1978 to 1983, went on to tie the knot with Meg Ryan in the wake of his split from Thompson. The couple were together for a decade from 1991 before finalizing their divorce. They share son Jack, 32 . The Perfect Storm actor was then married to Kimberly Quaid from 2004 until 2018. They welcomed twins Daisy and Thomas, now 16, in 2007. He married his current wife Laura Savoie, 31, in 2020. Thompson had been speaking at the opening night of Back To The Future - the Musical at Hollywood Pantages Theatre, Los Angeles on Wednesday night. The actress, who played Lorraine McFly in the popular sci-fi comedy, joins a host of female celebrities who have addressed the future of women's reproductive rights after Trump was named President-elect in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Billie Eilish described his victory as 'a war on women' while Lili Reinhart said her heart 'absolutely breaks' for the women who saw 'millions of people vote for their abuser.' Hailey Bieber wrote on Instagram: 'Supporting a convicted felon over a woman is f***ing insane. That's really all there is to say.' Jamie Lee Curtis encouraged Harris supporters to continue to 'fight against tyranny, one day at a time.'
