Leeds: Pedestrian and cycle route linking universities unveiled

Updated plans for a pedestrian and cycle route linking three universities with the middle of Leeds have been revealed.

Leeds City Council said improvements to the "key artery" between Hyde Park and the city centre would provide students and other residents with new cycle lanes, bus stops, pavements, crossings and public spaces.

The £20.9m scheme aimed to improve journeys for those using sustainable transport along Woodhouse Lane, Blenheim Terrace, Blenheim Walk and Albion Street.

A further consultation on the 2km route, which passes The University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, and Leeds Arts University, is set to run until 17 December.

A previous public survey found concerns about the safety of cyclists along the route, along with pedestrians experiencing difficulty in crossing busy roads.

The scheme is being run in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, with the majority of funding coming from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, the council's deputy leader, said: "It's current layout makes it unsafe for all road users but especially those who walk, wheel or cycle.

"The plans will not only uplift the look of the area and create new public spaces for people to enjoy, they will transform how people get around."
