TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Let's raise the woof for WCTV's Julie Montanaro! The Animal Shelter Foundation just announced the recipients of its inaugural 2024 Round of A-Paws Awards. This recognition honors individuals, organizations, and businesses committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and inspiring positive change for homeless animals. WCTV anchor Julie Montanaro is the recipient of its highest honor, the Founder's Award! Her weekly Furry Friday segments spotlight shelter pets awaiting adoption. "Her compassionate storytelling has helped countless animals find loving homes," ASF President Kathy Maiorana said. Julie started Furry Friday in December 2023 to try to boost adoptions at the overcrowded shelter. To date, more than 125 fogs featured on Furry Friday have found permanent homes. The Animal Shelter Foundation also honored these Round of A-Paws Award winners:Animal Advocate Award: Patricia Cooper This year's Animal Advocate Award is presented to Patricia Cooper, a dispatcher with the City of Tallahassee Animal Control. Patricia has spent over two decades advocating for animals in her care. Known for her calm demeanor and expertise, Patricia is a trusted voice in emergencies, guiding animal control officers and ensuring the safety of both animals and people. Her commitment has protected countless animals and serves as an inspiration to all.Animal Welfare Champion Award: Commissioner David O'Keefe ASF is honored to recognize Commissioner David O'Keefe with the Animal Welfare Champion Award. Commissioner O'Keefe has been a dedicated advocate for homeless animals, frequently promoting adoptable pets through social media and actively engaging in animal welfare events. His dedication extends beyond advocacy; he fosters animals, offering direct support and building a compassionate community for pets and people alike.Helping Hand Award: Cathy Ellsworth Cathy Ellsworth receives the Helping Hand Award for her outstanding contributions to animal welfare in Tallahassee. Cathy's work ranges from bottle-feeding orphaned kittens to arranging lifesaving rescue flights. Her extensive network and commitment have transformed the lives of countless animals, both locally and across the region. Known for her compassion and tenacity, Cathy is a vital lifeline for animals in need. Ellsworth arranged a Pilots N Paws rescue flight this summer that ultimately resulted in the adoption of both dogs on board. WCTV tagged along on that flight as we highlighted those going above and beyond to help shelter pets find homes.Community Partner Award: Be The Solution, Inc. For 15 years, Be The Solution (BTS) has been a cornerstone in the effort to reduce pet overpopulation in Tallahassee. Through affordable spay and neuter services, BTS has helped over 53,000 animals, leading to a 63% reduction in shelter intake. Their unwavering dedication to accessible veterinary care and responsible pet ownership has earned them the 2024 Community Partner Award.Community Partner Award: Camp Mojo's Camp Mojo's is recognized for its invaluable support to ASF and Tallahassee Animal Services. From hosting ASF's Doggie Manners classes to offering free camps for volunteers, Camp Mojo's has proven itself a compassionate partner in shelter initiatives. Their dedication not only provides essential care for shelter animals but also fosters a community invested in animal welfare. "This year's Round of A-Paws winners represent the heart and soul of animal advocacy in our community," ASF President Kathy Maiorana said. "Their dedication to help improve the lives of homeless animals and encourage responsible pet ownership has created a lasting positive impact. We are deeply grateful for their contributions to creating a more compassionate Tallahassee."
