Letter: Don't change rules at end of game

C.Wright29 min ago

Picture this scenario: There are two minutes left in the fourth quarter of a Nebraska football game against a highly-ranked team, and Nebraska has fought our way from behind. We just scored a touchdown, and the coaching staff is trying to decide whether to kick the extra point for a tie or go for two for a win.

Suddenly one of the officials, with a perplexed look, walks to the Nebraska sideline and informs them that the game must end with Nebraska down by one. Someone with a great deal of power wants the other team to win and has just convinced the NCAA to make a last-minute rule change that allows no extra points in the last two minutes.

Would Nebraska fans erupt over the unfairness? Boy, howdy they would! You would hear the screams from Scottsbluff to Omaha.

Now, consider the unfairness of powerful men like Sen. Lindsey Graham and Gov. Jim Pillen seeking an equally last-minute rule change that would change Nebraska from its current allocation of electoral votes to a winner-takes-all system, with just weeks to go until the election.

And the governor rationalizes it in the name of "unity".

Nebraska senators, I ask you to consider how much a last-minute special session to change our electoral vote system would sully and betray Nebraska's reputation for honesty and fairness. Please say no to the governor's "minutes-on-the-clock" boondoggle.
