Lexington Human Society answers call they’ve never seen before

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A few weeks ago, the Lexington Human Society answered a call they'd never had before.

"A single-family house had over 20 German shepherds. Full grown, adult German shepherds, not puppies," said Katy Stoess, special events manager at LHS.

Unfortunately, they've seen hoarding situations but never with full-grown dogs.

Lexington Fayette Animal Care and Control has been working with the case itself, while the humane society is trying to get the rescued siblings, like Merlot and Zinfandel, safe and happy homes.

"Some of them are up for adoption, some of them have already been adopted, and the rest are undergoing some medical care until their healthy enough to be adopted," said Stoess.

Of the over 20 dogs rescued, three shepherds are on the adoption floor, ready to find a home.

While there's never an ideal time for a situation like this, the Lexington Humane Society was at full capacity a couple of weeks ago when the dogs came to them. They say they did what they had to do.

"Whether that's putting up kennels in people's offices, in the conference room, in the barn. We put them wherever we can," said Stoess.

Now, they're calling on those with experience with German shepherds to help.

"We definitely recommend the adopter have some experience with German shepherds. They're such a cool breed. They're such a unique breed, but they're high energy, so with that experience, we believe it'll be a more successful adoption," Stoess said.

If you would like to help out, the humane society asks that you come visit them. If you don't have previous experience with German shepherds but still want to do your part, Stoess says fostering or adopting other pets will help, too.
