There are so many wonderful things you can do in November, and they involve paying tribute or showing your respect for someone.

The first happens on Veterans Day, especially if you enjoy hearing history ends on a positive note and may inspire you. Ask Your Father: Conversations with Pop about War, Food and Following your Dreams.

Author Tony Wasowicz will be at Mesa Public Library for a presentation about his book. The event will start at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 and includes an opportunity to make or drop off a card(s) that will be given to local veterans on the same day. Tony and Mesa Public Library are allowing our non-profit, Champions of Youth Ambitions (C'YA), to collect pet food, toys and treats for our Vets with Pets project. We will also help the Los Alamos and Santa Fe Animal Shelters. The items can be used, but in good condition.

The other important thing about November is the chance to submit the name of an individual, couple, club or organization for the annual CommUNITY Asset Awards. C'YA allows submissions of nominees through Dec. 24. You just need to tell us who does something good for this community, in the state or in the world. THEY must live, work, or go to school here and it costs nothing but your time. You must also tell us how to contact them with a phone number, address or email.

We have been recognizing people since 2008/9 before we were even an official non-profit. We normally have about 50 nominees each year and recognize everyone at a community celebration. One lucky winner takes home the Spirit of the West Award. The award is handcrafted by artist and welder, Richard Ronquillo.

You can request an old school hard copy of the nomination form or send us the information. We prefer online to capture more information for why you think this person makes a difference. Take A Second, Make A Difference is our motto and each year we hear the most heartwarming stories.

We can be contacted at 505.695.9139 and you can call or text. You can also email us at , check out our website at www.cya- nm.org or check us out on Facebook! We ask YOU to keep it a secret as all the winners find out who nominated them and why at the big event. You can find past winners by looking for more information in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
