LMT boys' basketball power rankings
The 2023-24 high school boys’ basketball season is a few weeks old, which means the return of the Laredo Morning Times high school boys’ basketball power rankings.
LMT will release updated power rankings every week once the season gets rolling. There’s no telling which team will end the season at No. 1 as most of the teams feature a bunch of new faces this year. However, that should make for an exciting season.
So, here’s a look at power rankings early into the 2023-24 campaign.

Next game: vs Alexander on Thursday at Border Olympics
The Toros are still winless on the season as they fell to Nikki Rowe during the holiday break at Laredo ISD’s annual Thanksgiving showcase at Texas A&M International. Cigarroa looks to get its first win of the season later this week at this year’s annual Border Olympics tournament.

Next game: vs Martin on Tuesday
The Wolves have opened the season with mixed results. But they have shown that when they are at the top of their game, they can beat anybody. And LBJ has an opportunity to make a statement on Tuesday when it hosts Martin – arguably the hottest team in the Gateway City right now.

The Knights look to bounce back after getting handed a massive loss to United South this past weekend. St. Augustine has the talent to surprise teams this season. However, it needs to consistently hit its shots to do so. And the Knights will have an opportunity to surprise people when they take on Nixon on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs are arguably the most talented team in Laredo this year. However, they have struggled as of late as they fell to Edinburg North and Martin last week. Alexander can easily dominate and be an extremely impressive team. However, it needs to figure out its recent issues to do so.

After struggling to open the season, the Tigers have rolled lately. They defeated two quality teams this past week in McAllen and Alexander. If Martin continues to play like it has been for the extended future, it can easily continue to climb up the power rankings.

The Longhorns have struggled a bit to open the year. However, they can easily emerge as the Gateway City’s best team at season’s end. They have the talent to do so. And while they have a losing record, they have played a handful of quality teams to begin the year.

Next game: vs Edinburg Vela on Tuesday
The Panthers have opened Year 2 of the Gogi Martinez on solid footing. United South looks like a team that can easily be a dominating force all year long. If the Panthers continue to play like they have been, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make some noise in this year’s Border Olympics tournament.

The Mustangs have opened the season off solidly. They have shown they are still a force to be reckoned with, even if they lost a bunch of talent from last year’s team. Nixon can make some noise in this year’s Border Olympics tournament later this week.
