Local college basketball roundup: UVa women win in Cayman Islands

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman — Yonta Vaughn scored 14 points off the bench Friday to lead the Virginia women's basketball team to an 81-59 win over Tulane in the Cayman Islands Classic.

The event has predetermined pairings. UVa (4-1) will play seventh-ranked LSU on Saturday.

Sam Brunelle had 12 points off the bench for UVa. Alexis Smith added 10 points off the bench.

The UVa bench provided 49 points. It was the biggest output by the UVa bench since a 2011 game against Radford.

Tulane (3-2) built a 20-5 lead. The 15-point deficit made this Virginia's largest comeback win since the team erased a 19-point deficit in a 2019 win over Virginia Tech.

UVa scored the first 14 points of the second quarter to grab a 26-24 lead.

Virginia, which led 36-34 at halftime, scored the first 10 points of the second half. UVa led the entire second half.

Northern Illinois 72, Radford 50

Brooke Stonebraker scored 20 points Friday to lead the Huskies (2-3) past the Highlanders (2-5) in the Puerto Rico Thanksgiving Clasico in San Juan.

Ashlyn Traylor-Walker scored 19 points for Radford. Taniya Hanner added 12 points. Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker tallied 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Radford shot just 32.8% from the field.

The Huskies were 15 of 30 from 3-point range, while Radford was 3 of 17.

The Huskies led just 28-25 at halftime but outscored Radford 22-8 in the third quarter. They made six 3-pointers in that quarter.
