Local roundup: Misericordia, King’s women’s basketball both 4-0 atop conference
Tessa Zamolyi had 20 points and 13 rebounds Saturday and the Misericordia University women’s basketball team remained unbeaten in the MAC Freedom with a 77-62 win at Stevens.
Jordan Barth added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars, who are 14-1 overall and 4-0 in Freedom conference play.
Erica Haefele had 12 points, six assists and five steals and Gianna Delfino added 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals in the victory.
King’s 76, FDU-Florham 66
Rebecca Prociak put up her eighth double-double of the season, her former Holy Redeemer teammate Sam Rajza had her first and the Monarchs held off a second-half FDU -Florham comeback bid.
Prociak scored a season-high 31 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and finished wiht a career-high eight blocks. Rajza and senior Mackenzie Yori both scored 18 points and Rajza adding 11 boards, six assists, and five steals. Yori also grabbed five rebounds.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
King’s 85, FDU-Florham 59
Sophomore guard Kevin Hunter was 6-of-11 from 3-point range and the Monarchs cruised to their first MAC Freedom victory of the season.
Hunter was one of five players in double figures as the Monarchs climbed back over .500 on the season at 8-7.
Hunter finished with 20 points, one under his career high, and Jake Pawliczak added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Tyler Faux converted five 3-point field goals for 15 points, Andrew Hudak was right behind with 14 and Patrick Galvin had his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Stevens 81, Misericordia 61
Noah Rivera had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars in a loss at Stevens.
Tony Harding and Jake Bartholomew added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Misericordia.
Wilkes finishes fifth at MAC Championships
Kyle Medrow earned a silver medal, while former Dallas standout Moustafa Almeky and John Devito each finished with a bronze to lead a strong showing for the Colonels in the MAC Championships at Lycoming.
The Colonels posted 81.5 team points to finish in fifth place, trailing fourth-place Alvernia’s 86.5 points.
Medrow, a senior, started his day with a pair of pins to reach the finals but fell to a pin in the 141-pound class.
Moustafa a junior from Shavertown, decked Michael Kustanbauter of Lycoming in 4:58 to make it to the semifinals before dropping a 6-4 decision to Tonee Elliss of Alvernia. He won out in the consolation bracket, taking a pair of 5-0 decisions over Joe Embleton of Messiah and Brody Keefe of Lycoming respectively to finish third.
Devito, a freshman, earned bronze at 174-pounds.
Kravits takes bronze, King’s takes 7th
Kade Kravits started and ended his day with pins to finish in third place in the 165-pound class, helping the Monarchs finish at No. 7 at the MAC Championships, helping King’s to a seventh-place finish with 23 points.
Kravits, from Dallas, built a 14-2 lead before dropping Wyatt Bingaman of Messiah in the opening bout, then recorded a 5-0 win over Paul Santomarco of Lycoming in the quarterfinals.
He lost a major decision in the semifinlas, but bounced back for a 6-0 win in the consolation semis before earning bronze with a pin of Messiah’s Kevin Edwards at 3:43.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY
Wilkes 4, Nazareth 3
Devon Schell’s game-winning goal at 2:26 of overtime completed a furious comeback for the No. 12 Colonels, who recovered from Friday’s disheartening defeat against No. 6 Utica by beating the Golden Flyers to break a two-game losing streak.
Donald Flynn started the comeback for Wilkes at 3:47 of the third with a power-play goal off assists by Nick Fea and Tyler Barrow.
Fea tied the score at 15:32 of the third with helpers from Dylan Kuipers and Michael Gurska.
The teams then went into a five-on-five overtime, where Schell completed the rally with the winning goal off assists from Phil Erickson and Barrow.
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY
Neumann 4, Wilkes 0
Allyson Joly made 16 saves for the Colonels in a loss at Neumann, which jumped on Wilkes early with three first-period goals.
Katelyn Brown scored her first two goals of the season in Neumann’s victory.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
King’s 3, Saint Elizabeth 2
King’s 3, Lehman 0
Joe Joe Herman made 19 kills in the first match and 11 more in the second as the Monarchs opened their first varsity season by sweeping a pair of matches at Scandlon Gym.
Herman finished with eight digs and served three aces as King’s held on against Saint Elizabeth, while Matt Piontkowski rolled up 15 kills and Sam Capwell added 11 kills. George Beck dished out 49 asists and Kyle Duggan made 15 digs for King’s.
In the second match, Beck had 33 assists and seven digs and Liam Martinchek finished with seven kills to go with Herman’s 11 kills, seven digs and four aces.
Misericordia 3, Lasell 1
Misericordia 3, Randolph-Macon 0
Ryan Miller was named the MVP while leading Misericordia to a sweep in the Cougar Kickoff Classic at the Anderson Center.
Miller made 17 kills, served three aces and blocked three shots in the victory over Lasell and added 13 kills, three blocks and seven digs against Randolph-Macon in a 25-20, 28-26, 21-25, 25-23 victory.
Dylan Sellitti, who was voted to the all-tournament team, had 40 assists in the opener and 27 assists to go with three aces in the second match for the Cougars.
Connor Westerfield finished with 29 digs on the day, including 11 in the tourney final as Misericordia swept to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-21 victory.
MEN’
Misericordia puts pair in top 5
Bryce Steele and Conall Joyce led the Cougars with fifth-place finishes at the Susquehanna Orange & Maroon Classic.
Steele was fifth in the heptathlon and Joyce (12.66m) was fifth in the shot put, where Evan Jones was seventh.
WOMEN’
Karnish sets new standard
Brenna Karnish won two events and set a school record to lead Misericordia at the Susquehanna Orange & Maroon Classic.
Karnish set the Cougars record in the shot put with a throw of 13.03 meters and added a win in the weight throw (15.11m).
Hayley Engle won the high jump (1.57m) and Le’June Berry was third.
Karen Traub (2.75m) finished second in the pole vault while the 1,600-meter relay team of Amber Hackenberg, Hailey Colabelli, Averi Rine and Sonialys Badillo also finished second in 4:22.96.
Colabelli (1:03.73) was second at 400m while Badillo was third and Shelbi Jones, Rine and Hackenberg all finished in the top eight.
Alexis Baddick was third in the triple jump (10.45m) and Jill Olewine was fifth.
