he Wilkes University women’s soccer team
will open Freedom Conference playoff action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Drew
University in a semifinal contest.
The Lady Colonels, seeded third in the four-team event, enter the match
with an overall record of 8-11. Drew, seeded second, comes in with an overall
mark of 6-10-2. The Lady Rangers defeated Wilkes 4-1 during the regular
season.
Wilkes features the one-two scoring tandem of juniors Holly Shiber and
Brooke Shreaves. Shiber leads the team with 10 goals and eight assists.
Shreaves has nine goals and one assist.
Junior Jennifer Pawleshyn will get the start in goal for the Lady Colonels.
Pawleshyn has stopped 115 shots this season, while allowing an average of 2.36
goals per contest.
The winner of Wednesday’s contest will face either DeSales University or
the University of Scranton for the Freedom Conference title on Saturday.
The winner of Saturday’s contest will receive an automatic bid into the
upcoming NCAA Division III championships. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for
senior citizens and $2 for students, with children under 6 being admitted free
of charge.
Cougars on PAC honor roll
The following College Misericordia players were named to the Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference’s player of the week honor roll.
Field Hockey: Courtney Pierce, of Vernon, N.J. She had one goal and one
assist in a 2-0 PAC week.
Volleyball: Ashley Dixon, a Lackawanna Trail graduate, had 15 kills, 14
aces and 19 digs in a 1-1 PAC week.
Cross Country: Chris Wadas, a Hanover graduate, finished second in the
field of 24 (29:59) at Albright. Meaghan Hession, of Baltimore, finished third
in the field of 39 (21:31) at Albright.
LOCAL ICE HOCKEY
Pirates ice Hawks, Senators
Ken Suchoski, of Wilkes-Barre, scored two goals on Saturday against the
Harverford Hawks and turned in a strong defensive effort on Sunday against the
Grundy Senators to lead the Pocono Pirate Pee Wee A ice hockey team to a
weekend sweep.
The Pirates defeated the Hawks 6-2. Other Pirates scoring goals were Nick
Zaino, of Pittston; Brian Higgs, of Mountaintop; Ray Spiccioli, of Pittston,
and Ricky Rose, of Shavertown.
On Sunday, Kevin Zirnheld, of Mountaintop, and Max Van Gorder, of
Wallenpaupack, each scored two goals in the Pirates’ 6-2 win over the
Senators.
The Pirates’ next game is scheduled for Saturday against the Delaware Jr.
Blue Hens at the Ice Box in Jenkins Township.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Special Olympians to compete
Fourteen Special Olympics athletes and five coaches from Luzerne County
will take part in the 2001 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Fall Festival from
Nov. 2-4 at Villanova University.
Local athletes will join a total of 950 athletes and coaches who will take
part in the statewide event. The event will include three days of competition
in long distance running/walking, powerlifting, roller skating, soccer and
volleyball and bocce.
Local athletes will compete in long distance running/walking and
powerlifting. Here’s a list of those competing: Janel Bonner, Jenny
Burakiewcz, Jeanne Hammerbacher, Danielle Sawicki, Maryanne Shiptoski, Tracey
Tribendis, Karen Trzcinski, Donnalee Waechter, Bill Sukus, Matt Jones, Josh
Jones, Robert Solonoski, Chris Spence and Mark Spence.
Flynn on card at Bushkill
Marty Flynn, of Scranton, (7-0, 4 KOs) will take on Tracy Horn, of
Harrisburg, Nov. 10 at the Fernwood Hotel and Resort in Bushkill.
Flynn is co-managed by world middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins.
Other fighters appearing on the card include Kid Duran (9-0 4 KOs), Paul
Malinaggi (2-0 1 KO) and Prince Ajami (7-0 3 KOs).
Cost is $40 for front row, $30 for rows 2-5 and $20 for general admission.
