Local Sports roundup: Helena shines at Mountain West, Capital boys soccer stays hot

The Mountain West Classic is one of the top cross country meets in the state of Montana and Helena High acquitted itself quite well on Saturday in Missoula in the 2024 rendition.

Elliot Stimpson was among three Helena High boys to finish in the top 15 overall in the meet taking an impressive second overall with a time of 15:50.82. Not far behind him was Milo Kauffman who finished the course in 16:02. Henry Sund also notched a top-15 finish for Helena, taking 15th after posting a time 16:10.

Dylan Hill was also 30th for the Bengals (16:31) while Jake Matthews also finished in the top 50 (16:49). Kate Lee (20:01..62) was the top performer in the girls meet for local teams with a 30th-place finish. Isabel Ward (20:36) was also in the top 100 with a time of 20:36.

Bruins keep winning in soccer

It was a happy return to the soccer pitch on Saturday for Cohen Koch who returned to the lineup for the Capital Bruins and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 result over Sentinel. CHS is now 7-1 on the season. The Capital girls team lost 2-0 to Sentinel, while the Helena High boys dropped a 4-0 decision at the hands of Missoula Hellgate.

Bengals, other local teams net volleyball wins

On Thursday, the Helena Bengals volleyball team wrapped up their week with a 3-0 sweep over Missoula Big Sky by the scores 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21. Birdie Heuiser had 16 kills and 2.5 blocks in the win for the Bengals. The senior also paced the team with five aces. Kiran Dusko had a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs.

Capital dropped to 0-13 on the season Thursday night with a 3-1 match defeat at the hands of Butte High. Kate Drynan put forth a solid effort with 10 assists and eight digs. Jaiden Grooms managed three aces, while Dani Wines was credited with fur blocks. Kaelyn Saari was the top attacker for CHS with 11 kills.

The Jefferson volleyball team has been dominant to start the season but suffered its first loss of the season in five sets to Ennis on Thursday. Cameron Toney was a force for the Panthers with 25 kills and 16 digs. She also had two blocks. Erica Shields contributed with 24 assists and 26 digs.

Townsend swept Lone Peak on Thursday in volleyball. The Bulldogs followed that up with another sweep of Manhattan on Saturday (25-15, 25-11, 25-17). Holley Newman had 18 assists and 16 digs for Townsend. Kaitlyn Noyes managed 10 kills and two aces in the win. The Bulldogs improved to 7-3 with the win.

East Helena dropped to 1-7 on the season with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Billings Central on Saturday. Maya Westerhold, Rori Shoenfeld, Talea Wigen had three kills each in the loss.
