HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Here are the four stories you need to know for October 4, 2024.

Harvest of Harmony Harvest of Harmony kicks off Saturday in Grand Island. The parade begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the Field Competition which will take place at Grand Island Senior High's Memorial Stadium.

The parade is known for its mass amount of marching bands. There will be 181 floats, 130 of which are bands.

Fall Open Burn Period canceled The Grand Island Fire Department has canceled the open burn period that was scheduled for October 13-26 due to the abnormally high fire conditions. Dry air in the region has thrown what little moisture we have left out. In the meantime, it has circulated high, and somewhat warm winds in the region. These is the possibility to spark fires, which is what GIFD is trying to avoid.

If you need to dispose of grass, leaves or sticks you can take them to the Grand Island Transfer Station at no charge if you are a resident.

Lead Warning The South Heartland District Health Department issued a reminder to parents on Friday morning of the dangers that lead can do to children. The main threat is lead paint, which was banned in 1978.

The department estimates 25-35% of homes in Adams and Clay counties and 35-45% of homes in Nuckolls and Webster counties have elevated lead risk due to the age of the housing.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children who have a high chance of being exposed to lead be tested at 12 and 24 months.

NHS plans to become "no kill" shelter The Nebraska Humane Society plans to become a "no kill" shelter. This is where the shelter is able to save 90% of the animals brought in each year. 100% is not possible due to illness and safety reasons.

The shelter plans to offer more services like financial support and training to help keep the surrender rate low, and boost adoption rates.
