Locals react after boy was shot in Indian Orchard
SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – Neighbors we spoke to are in shock something like this happened to a young boy, but a few others said that, unfortunately, they aren't surprised about the area.
"This is a young boy. Had nothing to do with anything. But it just shows the sickness that we have in society," said Springfield Mayor, Domenic Sarno.
A boy is at Baystate Medical Center after being shot around 8:30 Thursday night in Indian Orchard.
The shooting was at a Racing Mart on the corner of Main Street and Milton Street. Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh told 22News the boy was in a car.
"I have no patience. I will not tolerate this behavior," said Mayor Sarno.
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said he is hoping those who are to blame are charged to the full extent of the law.
"There are camera systems in the area, plus in the station area and I'm hopeful that they will hunt down and track down the culprits," said Mayor Sarno.
Residents we spoke to told 22News this is very sad, but unfortunately, it's not uncommon for this area in the past couple of years.
"Lately you have been hearing it more and more out here. The Orchard is not what it used to be," said Indian Orchard resident, Ricardo Carvalho.
Carvalho lives around the corner and heard the gunshots from his home.
"It's sad, you know what I mean, It's sad that, a kid that young, he has nothing to do with anything. He's an innocent life, luckily he will pull through, but it's sad, could've been worse," said Carvalho.
One mother in the area we spoke to has 4 kids. She told 22News that she is nervous, wondering if she has to think about moving.
Mayor Sarno also said he has tried to reach out to the mother to check in on the boy, but his thoughts and prayers for good health and speedy recovery go out to the boy, his mother, and the family.
The boy's identity and age were not released and no arrests have been announced. This is an ongoing investigation by the Springfield Police Department.
