FARMINGDALE, NY — The Long Island Chrysanthemum Show is set for Starkie Bros. Garden Center in Farmingdale in early November, according to a news release.

The 69th Annual Show will be held in the Pottery Shed at Starkie Bros Garden Center, at 721 Main St., Farmingdale. It will be open to the public for viewing from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2; and 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.

The awards presentation is slated to begin at 3:45 p.m. Nov. 3 and breakdown immediately after.

Some blooms will be available to the public for a small donation to the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society.

"These are not your mother's chrysanthemums!" the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society stated.

These mums cannot be bought three for $20 at the local supermarket, the society wrote. The majority of mums in competition will be giants — the minimum size of a bloom to get into the competition is 4 inches, with some up to 11 inches across.

"Many people remember them as 'Football Mums,'" according to the society.

"Amateur growers are encouraged to participate (you do not have be a member of the society to compete), simply bring your blooms (both Football and Garden Hardy) to the Pottery Shed, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1," the society wrote. "The members of the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society will help you get your blooms labeled and on the show tables. Please know the name of the variety that you will be entering."
