Lorena singer-songwriter Kayla Ray returns for families' benefit
Country singer-songwriter Kayla Ray returns to Waco to perform a Sunday benefit show with the band The Standards and Zack Aaron starting at 3 p.m. at Papa Joe's in Lorena to raise funds to support the families of late musicians Chris Spicer and Jon Dews.
Ray recalled that Spicer was part of a songwriting circle that met in Waco and had let her band open for his band Giblet Head at the South by Southwest music festival one year.
Dews played drums in her band for several years, touring across Texas and the Midwest. She recorded his song "Rockport" on her first album and for the last five years has opened her shows with that song.
Ray, now based in Nashville, comes to Waco in the midst of touring dates in Beaumont and Fort Worth. She has a publishing deal with Average Joes Entertainment and a record deal for her latest release "The World's Weight."
Ray and her band have toured heavily this fall throughout the Midwest and West as well as Alabama and Tennessee.
