LPS working to fix and prevent unsolicited changes to school names on Google

After the names of a handful of Lincoln middle and high schools were edited on Google Maps over the weekend, Lincoln Public Schools is working with Google to fix any unsolicited name changes and prevent it from happening again.

Anyone online has the power to suggest changes to the names of schools and businesses listed on Google. Once a suggestion is made, Google often accepts the changes without checking with organizations for accuracy, according to Mindy Burbach, executive director of communications at LPS.

The schools' names were changed to include current sayings and phrases that are widely used online by teenagers and can be inappropriate in some cases.

The situation isn't just happening in Lincoln, however. Similar incidents at school districts across the nation have been popping up recently, too, Burbach said in a statement.

As of late Monday morning, it appeared the names of every school impacted had been fixed. The district is continuing to monitor the situation and correct the names as they are discovered.
