AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) – Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan (DFL) hosted the second annual women's pheasant hunt Wednesday morning in Austin.

According to Flanagan, this hunt aims to attract more women to hunting and other outdoor recreational activities in the state.

"I just wanted to to do this to make sure that people know that pheasant hunting is accessible," she said. "I want more women to do it. I picked up the sport when I was 39, and so you don't have to grow up hunting. There's a whole lot of folks who want to teach you how to do this."

Local hunters and other state lawmakers joined Flanagan on the hunt. "There is never a bad day for pheasant hunting," she said. "Even if you don't get a bird, you're still out in nature with dogs. You're having good conversation. It was a perfect day today."

Over the weekend, the annual governor's pheasant hunting opener took place in the southern Minnesota town of Sleepy Eye. Next year's pheasant hunting opener will be hosted in Ortonville, a town in Big Stone County that is nearly 200 miles west of Minneapolis.
