Major traffic shift on I-64 in Hampton to start as early as Sunday

D.Nguyen1 hr ago

Drivers using Interstate-64 in Hampton will soon encounter a new traffic pattern that is set to last for several months, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The new traffic pattern will affect drivers between Armistead Avenue and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A/B) and Rip Rap Road (exit 265C). The traffic shift, which will start as early as Sunday, is due to construction of the Hampton segment of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network — a 45-mile network of high-occupancy toll express lanes on I-64, from west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake.

VDOT says traffic will be shifted toward the median from the outside lanes to the inside lanes on I-64 East as early as Sunday and on I-64 West as early as Monday to allow for continuing roadway work, drainage improvements, barrier setting and noise barrier construction.

The department estimates the traffic shift will be in place until the summer of 2025.

The I-64 east off-ramps to Rip Rap Road and Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue will be closed nightly from Sunday to Oct. 3, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. with signed detours in place.

VDOT is encouraging drivers to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and urges them to use caution when traveling near work zones.
