Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise will remain one of the more powerful members of the Congress after safely securing his 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives on Election Day.

With all votes in the race tallied Tuesday night, the Associated Press called the contest for Scalise, the current House majority leader. He received 67% of the vote in a field with Republicans Randall Arrington and Ross Shales, Democrat Mel Manuel and Frankie Hyers, who is unaffiliated.

In his campaign ads, Scalise stressed his links to former President Donald Trump and joined him in attacking the policies of Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. Border security and the economy were the issues he most frequently stressed, while the other candidates in the 1st District race drew no mention or attention from the incumbent.

Scalise has represented his New Orleans-area district in Congress since 2008. His political alliances at the Capitol include the House Pro-Life Caucus, the Second Amendment Task Force and the Republican Study Committee, composed of the party's most conservative members in Congress.
