Man jailed after 'senseless' attacks in Cambridge

A 32-year-old man has begun a two-year jail term after admitting four early-hours assaults in one of Britain's most famous university cities.

Police said Jessie Slack had punched four men in Cambridge on 11 May, with one suffering a fractured skull and a "traumatic brain injury".

Slack, of no known address, was jailed at Peterborough Crown Court on Thursday.

A detective said Slack had attacked without provocation and seemed "intent on violence".

He admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm without intent and assault by beating.

Police said, after the hearing, that Slack had initially got into an argument with two men and had thrown punches at both.

Shortly afterwards he had punched two other men; one suffered a fractured skull and "traumatic brain injury".

He was later arrested in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Det Con Joanna Mackenzie said: "Slack seemed intent on violence as he attacked people without any provocation in these senseless attacks."

She went on: "The injuries could have been even worse, with this incident bearing all the hallmarks of a one-punch killing.

"It is only by luck that this was not the case."
