Man sentenced to 15 years in prison for child sex crimes in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - A man has been found guilty of child sex crimes in court after abusing a 9-year-old girl, according to the 47th District Attorney's Office.

Officials say the girl was abused by Vonqualn Fugett, a significant other of one of her family members, at the age of nine.

The victim did not tell anyone about the abuse until she was 12.

The abuse was immediately reported to police by the adults the victim told.

At the trial, the 12-year-old told a jury what she endured and pointed out Fugett as her abuser.

The jury also heard from the victim's mother and sister, who testified saying Fugett was a trusted family member that was around the child often.

A counselor that the victim had been seeing since coming forward about her abuse also testified, stressing the impact the abuse had on the child and the progress they have made in counseling.

Fugett was found guilty of two counts of indecency of a child by sexual contact.

Fugett was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
